I've been skimming the first book! I heard the first season followed to books closest and it definitely feels that way.

I don't hate her in the show either, tbh. She doesn't come off that bitchy or helpless. But maybe you see it that way because she's significantly awesomer in the books (going by your comments).

She needed saving in the season one finale, no? She saves herself in the books. She bitches at Eric all the fucking time, she banters with him in the books. She bitches at Tara all the time, she hardly ever does in the books. And so on. It's hard to describe. While SVN Sookie is conservative yet independent, TB Sookie is misogynist like the whole series. My opinion of course.
