It is a lot more layered and interesting in the books than in the series. In the books, Jamie doesn't wait around for Claire to have all the ideas and Claire is, I think, a bit more reckless and less of a know-it-all. I think my pet peeve about the series, much as a love it, they've skewed the dynamics to make Claire more central, powerful and more of a 'strong woman'. It's not as though she's downtrodden in the novels, but rather that she's more of a person out of time who doesn't know everything about politics, history and who relies on Jamie's knack for managing and understanding people. Gurl likes her man to be competent! They're more on equal footing.
So after writing this novel, I'd say they are definitely worth it but you would have to decide how invested you are in seeing it through to the end, which is not yet written anyway.
