I'm rereading parts of Drums of Autumn and, damn son, Gabaldon is obsessed with genealogy. I don't actually know if you ever read any of the books but you know that Roger is like the great-great-great grandchild of Dougal and the best witch ever. And the genes are so strong that not only does he have Geillis's eyes, no, he is a Viking beast like Dougal! I thought it might please you to hear him described as such, though poor Ragnar might roll his eyes and have them for breakfast.

I started the first one a while ago but then RL got in the way. I've been meaning to ask if you think the books are worth it.

Weeeell, they would benefit from a bit of strict editing, especially later instalments. I stopped after the fourth book. I think I'd go on reading if I found Brianna tolerable. She, Roger and their offspring are becoming more central to the story and I'm just not interested in them. This is definitely down to personal preference - as we all know, I would rather write another thesis than give birth and bring up a child. And child characters are so rarely well-written.

That said, I enjoyed most of Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager and Drums of Autumn! I like the characters and how well Claire and Jamie's relationship is written. It is a lot more layered and interesting in the books than in the series. In the books, Jamie doesn't wait around for Claire to have all the ideas and Claire is, I think, a bit more reckless and less of a know-it-all. I think my pet peeve about the series, much as a love it, they've skewed the dynamics to make Claire more central, powerful and more of a 'strong woman'. It's not as though she's downtrodden in the novels, but rather that she's more of a person out of time who doesn't know everything about politics, history and who relies on Jamie's knack for managing and understanding people. Gurl likes her man to be competent! They're more on equal footing.

So after writing this novel, I'd say they are definitely worth it but you would have to decide how invested you are in seeing it through to the end, which is not yet written anyway.

OK, they sound worth giving a go. I'm not sure the modern day story-line will interest me as much, or even the later books. 18th Century Scotland the the Jacobite Rebellion is what caught my interest in the first place. Although Claire and Jamie having a more equal relationship sounds good.

I skip most of the modern-day stuff on rereads, especially Frank's delightful descent into assholery, although it's good for emotional check-ins on Claire, so to speak, because other characters describe her and she 'discovers' the past through sources. BUT VOYAGER HAS PIRATES! So that's good, yes?
